Why your WordPress site is slow on phones

Why your WordPress site is slow on phones

Your site may feel fine on office Wi-Fi, but most of your visitors arrive on a phone, often on mobile data. If a page takes more than a few seconds to show anything useful, many of them leave before it loads. These are the problems we find most often when we speed up WordPress sites.

1. Huge images

The most common cause by far. A photo straight from a camera or phone can be several megabytes, and a homepage slider might load five of them. Resize images to the size they are actually shown, compress them, and serve modern formats such as WebP. Lazy loading, which WordPress now does by default for most images, stops images further down the page from loading until they are needed.

2. Cheap or overloaded hosting

If the server takes a long time to respond, nothing else you do will fully fix the site. Very cheap shared hosting often puts hundreds of sites on one server. Good hosting with server-level caching, a recent version of PHP and a nearby data centre makes a noticeable difference.

3. No caching

Without caching, WordPress rebuilds every page from the database on every visit. A caching plugin or host-level cache stores a ready-made copy and serves it instantly. Pair it with a CDN to deliver files from a location close to each visitor, which helps a lot when your customers are spread across Nigeria, the UK and the US.

4. Too many plugins and heavy page builders

The number of plugins matters less than what they load. One slider, chat widget or social feed can add more weight than ten small plugins. Page builders also add extra code to every page. Remove plugins you do not use, and check which ones load scripts on pages where they are not needed.

5. Third-party scripts

Tracking pixels, chat widgets, embedded videos, font libraries and ad scripts all have to download from other servers before the page settles. Keep only the ones you really use, and load videos only when someone clicks play.

How to measure it

Run your pages through Google PageSpeed Insights and look at the mobile results, especially Largest Contentful Paint (how quickly the main content appears) and the field data from real users if your site has enough traffic. Test the pages that matter most, such as your homepage, service pages and contact page, not just one.

Speed tuning is part of every website we build and is included monthly in our Website Care plans. If your site is slow right now, send us the link and we will tell you what is holding it back.
